SHOOTING MECHANICS

SHOOTING is THE most important fundamental in the game of basketball. If you can shoot the ball, it opens up your entire offensive game. Defenders have to play you honest, and stay close enough to you to keep you from shooting an open shot. But once they start to play you tighter, that opens up the opportunity to drive to the basket. Learning HOW TO SHOOT A BASKETBALL takes time, patience, and most importantly, proper instruction on the correct mechanics of shooting. Below is a series of videos which should help you get started on how to shoot the basketball with the correct form.

YOU MUST GET ROTATION ON THE BALL: In this video, I discuss the importance of getting rotation on your ball when you shoot. With rotation, the ball has a better chance to go in, even when you’re not completely accurate. With rotation, the ball can now hit the rim softly, allowing the ball to bounce around the rim and possibly still go in even when the ball is not coming through the basket cleanly. Without rotation, there really is no room for error.

STRENGTHEN THOSE HANDS AND FINGERS: In this video, I discuss the importance of strengthening your hands. If you have strong hands, fingers and wrists, it will make it easier to shoot. The best way to strengthen your hands and fingers is through aggressive ball handling drills.

THE POSITION OF THE BALL IN YOUR HANDS IS KEY: In this video, I discuss the position of the ball in your hands when you shoot. It’s very important how the ball sits in your hands and how it releases from your fingers because it has everything to do with the direction, rotation and distance on your shot.

SHOOTING MECHANICS AND POSITION OF THE ARMS: In this next video I discuss the position of the arms when you shoot ( right hand shooters ). How your arms are positioned will determine how the ball is coming out of the hand during the release, which ultimately effects the direction and arc of the shot.

FOOTWORK AND BALANCE: Shooting starts from the ground up. There are many different philosophies on the shooting stance, but for me, being as squared to the basket as possible, especially when first learning HOW TO SHOOT A BASKETBALL, is very important. Why? Because it keeps the rest of your body on balance and squared to the basket, so that when you do go up to release the ball, everything is in line with the basket, from your head and shoulders to the follow through of the shot.

COMPLETE BREAKDOWN WITH ONE OF MY CLIENTS: This video will show you the entire movement of the shot, starting with where the ball begins and the position of the ball, to the proper timing and release point of the shot. Pay special attention to the off hand ( in David’s case, it’s his left hand since he’s a right handed shooter ).

The improvement she has made has been amazing. The combination of her hard work and Coach Beez's systematic approach to shooting and training can definitely be seen in her shot and how she approaches shooting. Brett Receives Most Improved Player Award

"When I started with Coach Beez I was on the bubble to make JV. Now I am the first man off the bench. Before, I was never comfortable taking any jump shots. Now I can create space off the dribble and shoot my jump shot with confidence." --Brett

THE 80 SHOT CLUB

THE 80 SHOT CLUB was created to provide all players that work with Coach Beez ( either privately or in TheJumpShotDoc program ) a goal. That goal is to be 1 of the top 14 players to make the most baskets out of 80 two-point shots, the most out of 40 three-point shots, and the most free throws in a row. It's been amazing how players have been able to take what they have learned, apply it, and make it into this elite group.
