basketball player matt beez

Matt Beeuwsaert (a.k.a. Coach Beez) was a Scholastic, Parade, and McDonald’s All-American out of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana. He was an All-Orange County Player of the Year, All-Angelus League MVP, and CIF Player of the Year. He was an integral part of Gary McKnight’s first CIF Championship team and was also Captain of the team. In an article by Steve Fryer of the O.C. Register, Coach Beez was voted as one of the top 25 high school players of all time to ever come out of Orange County.

Coach Beez went on to play at both Notre Dame, under Coach Digger Phelps, and U.C. Berkeley, under Coach Lou Campanelli. The highlight of his collegiate career was on national television vs UCLA where he tallied 29 pts, 15 rbs, and 7 assists, and was awarded Player of the Week in the Pac10.

Coach Beez in Europe

In Europe, Coach Beez played for ten professional seasons, winning six Championships with two teams: Racing Mechelen and Spirou Charleroi.

Coach Beez was a student of the game. He prided himself on being a solid fundamental player, with the ability to play multiple positions. He could dribble, pass, shoot, post up and rebound, and was often asked to defend the other team’s top scorer.

Coach Beez basketball training Coach Jackson

Coach Jackson was the first ever 4-year basketball letterman at perennial powerhouse Mater Dei H.S. in Santa Ana. At that time, playing on the varsity team as a freshman was very unusual. But Coach Jackson started that year on a team made up of mostly juniors and seniors. In fact, he started all four years at Mater Dei, during which time he was an All-Angelus League and All-Orange County selection, as well as a member of many all-tournament teams. At 6’3”, with an uncanny ability to bring the ball up and pass in the open court, Coach Jackson played the point guard position. With his size, lower body strength, and tenacious defense, he often shut down the other team’s point guard. He was also an excellent rebounder, with great timing and vertical leap, and as co-captain, played a huge role for Gary McKnight’s very first CIF Championship team at Mater Dei.

After high school, Coach Jackson received a scholarship to play at the University of Santa Barbara. He discovered that UCSB was not the program for him and transferred to Rancho Santiago Community College. While at Rancho, Coach Jackson became a J.C. All-American. From there, Coach Jackson went on to play his final two years at U.C. Riverside, where he was a two-time All League selection. Following his senior year, he won the Conference Defensive Player of the Year award.

Finally, Coach Jackson went on to play in the PBA, the top basketball league in the Philipines. He played professionally there for 10 years, winning two PBA Championships, was a member of the All-Defensive Team for 7 years, and was Defensive MVP for 3.

Following retirement and while still in the Philipines, Coach Jackson worked tirelessly with young players, helping them improve on their overall skill level. Coach Jackson believes that the first step towards becoming successful on the court is to master both offensive and defensive fundamentals.
